Honda Activa e: May Get Home Charging Option
The Honda Activa e: went on sale in India a few months ago and one of the biggest challenges that the electric scooter faces was its battery swapping technology. With no provision to plug in and charge the two, 1.5kWh batteries, users have to rely on Honda’s battery swapping stations to replace depleted batteries with fully changed units.
The challenge with that is the availability and accessibility of these battery swapping stations and the limit they impose on the distance and direction one can travel towards, with these scooters. While Bengaluru has a sizable number of such stations, other metros are lacking, severely impacting the adoption of the Activa e:. However, a solution may be on the cards.
Honda recently launched the CUV e: electric scooter in Europe. It is a similar scooter to the Activa e: down to the two swappable batteries. However, the CUV e: can be availed with a battery charging dock that can be used at home. This, effectively, takes away the hassle of adjusting one’s route to locate a battery swapping station.
While there is no official word from Honda India yet, offering these home charging docks with the Activa e: could positively influence the adoption of the electric scooter. It will also help Honda rethink and rejig its plans to set up battery swapping stations and alter the costs involved in setting up these charging stations.
